Finding yourself in the in-between

Hello my fellow seekers of the flow!

The word “Vinyasa” is derived from the Sanskrit term nyasa, which means “to place,” and the prefix vi, “in a special way”. That special way links movement and breath to attain balance in the mind and body. It's more than just transitioning from one pose to another; it's an art, a dance, and... certainly for me... a form of self-expression. Each transition between one asana to the next is a canvas where we paint the tapestry of our practice, weaving a story that transcends the physical postures.

The Spaces In-Between

In the rhythmic flow of a Vinyasa class, it's easy to become entranced by the arrival of the postures – the strength in Warrior, the grace in Tree, the surrender in Child’s Pose. But, let's not forget that the magic lies in the in-between, the transitions. The way we move from one pose to the next is just as significant as the postures themselves. It’s in these transitions that we truly feel the weight of our practice.

Vinyasa invites us to play with the in-between, to experiment with the tempo, the breath, and the subtle nuances that make the practice our own. Perhaps it's a playful hop forward or a gentle sway side to side.

Expression of the self

Imagine Vinyasa as a dance, and the spaces between the postures as the improvisational moments. How do you want to place yourself in these in-between spaces? Take a moment to explore the transitions – the journey from Downward Dog to Upward Dog, the fluidity of moving through Sun Salutations. In each moment, there's an opportunity to express yourself uniquely.

Next time you come to your mat can you allow yourself the freedom to express your inner rhythm, letting the movement be an extension, an articulation, of your current self. Whether strength, vulnerability, joy, or perhaps a quiet introspection, can you be intentional with your movements, infusing each transition with the essence of your being.

Life, like Vinyasa, is a series of transitions, and how we navigate the spaces in-between defines our journey. So, let's continue to express ourselves on and off the mat, embracing the beauty of the in-between and savoring every step of this wondrous dance called life.

Namaste.
