Take a deep breath with me. Feel your wings folded gently against your back, each feather a page of your own story. These aren't just any feathers—they're the carefully collected memories, lessons, and experiences that make you uniquely you. Can you feel the wind rustling through them, whispering of possibilities?
In our daily lives, we often become so intertwined with our patterns that we stop seeing them as choices. We do what we've always done, simply because we've always done it. But what if we could soar above these patterns, view them from a different vantage point?
Enter the Garuda Mudra—the eagle seal. As we interlace our thumbs and slowly spread our fingers like unfurling feathers, we place our hands on our hearts, creating a sacred connection between our physical and emotional selves. This simple gesture invites us to consider: Where in our lives have we fallen into patterns that no longer serve us?
The eagle's gift is perspective. From high above, patterns and connections emerge that remain invisible from the ground. Our practice today isn't just about physical movement—it's an invitation to expand in all ways. When we open our physical body, especially the side body, we create space for something new to emerge.
Our practice this month offers three interconnected gifts:
The Gift of Expansion
As we unfurl our wings fully, we become bigger, more spacious. Like an eagle spreading its wings to their full span, we create room for new possibilities and understandings. From this heightened perspective, what can you see that remained hidden before? What patterns emerge when you view your life from above? Perhaps you notice how your morning rush creates tension that ripples through your entire day, or how your evening scroll through social media affects your sleep quality. Maybe you discover that your strongest friendships are the ones where you've allowed yourself to be vulnerable, or that your most creative ideas come when you step away from your desk and into nature.
The Gift of Groundedness
Paradoxically, as we expand outward, we also draw inward. When we fold our wings close, we find our centre—our core truth. This grounding isn't a heavy landing but rather a lightness, a settling born of deep connection. It's the knowledge that we can soar precisely because we know where home is. Think of how you feel after a long day when you finally sink into your favourite chair, or that moment when you step into a hot shower and let the water wash away the day's tensions.
The Gift of Unfurling
Between expansion and grounding lies the delicious process of unfurling. This is the bridge, the mindful, gradual process of opening up to new experiences and perspectives. Like an eagle slowly extending its wings before take-off, we unfurl at our own pace, honouring each stage of our growth. This might look like gradually setting boundaries at work—or it could be the journey of healing from heartbreak: first allowing yourself to feel the pain, then slowly opening up to close friends, and eventually being ready to trust and love again.
Remember, every time you step onto your mat, you give yourself the gift of unfurling. You create space to see yourself and your world with fresh eyes, to open your wings gradually and authentically. Whether you're soaring high, resting on a peak, or in the process of unfurling your wings, you have the power to shift your view, to open yourself to the world, to embrace new horizons at your own perfect pace.
You are grounded. You are free. You are unfurling.
Take another deep breath. Feel those wings—your wings—and know that they'll carry you exactly where you need to go.
